Most of your customers are happy with your work. They just don't think to leave a review. It's not that they don't want to help. Life gets busy, and nobody reminded them.
The good news is that getting more Google reviews isn't complicated. You just need to ask the right way, at the right time, every time.
Why Google reviews matter so much
When someone searches for a plumber, a cleaner, or a roofer near them, Google shows a short list of businesses with star ratings. People look at two things first: how many reviews you have and how good they are.
More good reviews help you in three ways:
- You show up more often. Google pays attention to reviews when it decides which local businesses to show.
- People trust you before they call. A business with 80 reviews feels safer than one with 6.
- You win more jobs. When two businesses look the same, people usually pick the one with more reviews.
Ask right after the job is done
The best time to ask is when the customer is happiest. That's usually the same day you finish the job, while they're still looking at the clean carpet or the new water heater.
If you wait a week, they've moved on. If you ask in person, they'll say "sure!" and then forget. A short text the same day works best.
Keep the message short and friendly
Your review request should sound like you, not like a robot. Something like this works great:
Hi Sarah, thanks for choosing Ridgeline Plumbing today! If you were happy with Mike's work, would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It really helps our small business. [link]
A few tips:
- Use their first name and mention the job or the tech who helped them.
- Send a direct link to your Google review page so they don't have to search for you.
- Say thank you. People like helping a local business they had a good experience with.
Make it easy with one tap
Every extra step loses people. If they have to open Google Maps, search your name, scroll down, and find the review button, most won't finish.
Your Google Business Profile has a "Get more reviews" link you can share. When a customer taps it, the review box opens right away. That one link makes a big difference.
Send one friendly reminder
Some people mean to leave a review and just forget. One gentle reminder a couple of days later is fine. After that, let it go. You never want a happy customer to feel pushed.
Reply to every review
When someone leaves a review, thank them by name. If someone leaves a bad review, stay calm, thank them for the feedback, and offer to make it right. Future customers read your replies, and a kind, professional answer builds trust.
Make it automatic so it happens every time
Here's the hard part for most business owners: remembering. You're on job sites all day. Asking for reviews falls to the bottom of the list.
That's why I set this up to run on its own. When a job is marked done, your customer gets a friendly text with your review link. If they don't leave one, they get one reminder. You don't have to think about it, and the reviews keep coming in.
